Sajjan Jindal meets Bengal CM Suvendu Adhikari, puts ₹50,000 crore on the table
JSW Group's chairman sat down with the new chief minister at Nabanna, and a power plant ceremony in January is already on the calendar.

JSW Group Chairman Sajjan Jindal met West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari at Nabanna, the state secretariat in Kolkata, on Wednesday evening. It was their first meeting since Adhikari became chief minister, and investment in the state was the main item on the agenda.
The two discussed opportunities in power, power systems, ports, cement and steel. Jindal told Business Standard the meeting was "very good" and that a range of topics came up.
The group's Bengal plans are estimated at ₹50,000 crore. Jindal said ₹40,000 crore of that is earmarked for power, and the remaining ₹10,000 crore for other areas.
One date is already fixed. Adhikari said after the meeting that Jindal had committed to holding the bhoomipujan, the ground-breaking ritual, for the second unit of his power plant in the first week of January.
That plant has history. In April 2025, JSW began work on a 1,600-megawatt project at Salboni in Paschim Medinipur district. It is the largest greenfield plant in JSW Energy's portfolio and the biggest private-sector thermal power project in West Bengal, with an investment of ₹16,000 crore. Then Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee laid its foundation stone, alongside the JSW Industrial Park, which offers plug-and-play infrastructure.
Why does it matter? Big industrial houses watch closely how a new government treats projects started under the last one. A visit within weeks of the change, followed by a promised January ceremony, suggests JSW intends to carry on in Bengal. For the state, the plan could mean more power capacity and a possible push into ports, cement and steel. Neither side has yet said how the ₹50,000 crore will be phased.
