West Bengal drug crackdown: 378 arrested, Rs 64 crore in narcotics seized in a week
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari says a week-long statewide drive led to 212 NDPS cases, targeting both trafficking and illegal cultivation.

West Bengal police arrested 378 people and seized narcotics worth around Rs 64 crore in a week-long crackdown on drug trafficking and illegal cultivation, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said on Saturday, November 7.
The special drive ran from October 31 to November 7. Adhikari shared the figures in a social media post and said the operation led to 212 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
So what is the NDPS Act? It is the central law that governs the production, possession, sale and transport of banned drugs and psychotropic substances in India. Cases filed under it can carry stringent penalties, depending on the type and quantity of the substance involved.
The numbers work out to roughly 54 arrests and about Rs 9 crore in seizures a day over the eight-day span, if the figures are averaged. That is a simple calculation, not an official breakdown.
The announcement also flags illicit cultivation, not just street-level dealing. That means the drive aimed at supply at the source as well as at the networks that move drugs to buyers.
The post did not detail which drugs were seized, which districts saw the most action, or how many of those arrested are alleged peddlers versus carriers or users. Those specifics will show how deep the operation reached. For families, the immediate takeaway is that authorities are putting drug enforcement at the front of the state's agenda.
