UP Governor Anandiben Patel tells youth: build startups that fix local problems
At a Prayagraj startup conclave, Patel urged students to start with a real problem in their own community, from water scarcity to waste, and asked universities to become engines of jobs rather than degree factories.

Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel has a simple pitch for young entrepreneurs: look around your neighbourhood, find what is broken, and build a business that fixes it. She made the case on Wednesday at the 'Purvanchal Startup Samvad-2026' held at Prof Rajendra Singh (Rajju Bhaiya) University in Prayagraj.
Patel said startups should target everyday challenges, naming water conservation, agriculture, waste management and healthcare as priority areas. In her view, spotting the right problem is the first step toward a workable solution. A statement from Jan Bhavan in Lucknow carried her remarks on Thursday.
She pointed to Gujarat and Maharashtra, where public participation and innovation have helped communities deal with water scarcity, as proof that local effort can produce results.
Her message to higher education was just as direct. "Universities should not remain limited to awarding degrees but should develop as centres of startups and employment generation," she said. She asked campuses to switch on their innovation hubs and incubation centres, and to build design thinking, entrepreneurship and skill development into what students actually study.
Patel also wants ideas to move beyond the classroom. "Students should be encouraged to take their ideas forward through patent applications and prototypes," she said.
She sketched out a few tech-driven possibilities too. One was a specialised app that gives immediate help to people in distress. Another was a tool to help homeless people find a place to stay.
Why it matters: for students weighing a job hunt against a startup leap, the governor's pitch is that the best business ideas may already be on their doorstep, and that their university should help them test, protect and launch those ideas.
