Belagavi: Farmers across Karnataka will block national highways on Tuesday, October 13, from 11 am to press the Centre to increase the minimum selling price (MSP) of sugar to Rs 60 per kg and procure the entire quantity of ethanol produced by sugar factories, Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha and Hasiru Sene state president Chunappa Pujeri said on Monday.
Addressing reporters here, Pujeri said protests would be held in all districts to press for the demands.
He said that following a protest outside the residence of Union Food and Civil Supplies Minister Pralhad Joshi in Hubballi last month, the minister had convened a meeting with office-bearers of farmers' organisations in New Delhi.
During the meeting, Maharashtra Shetkari Sanghatana president and former MP Raju Shetty, along with other farmers' representatives, held discussions with Joshi for over three hours. However, the minister sought another month to take a decision, Pujeri said.
.Karnataka sugarcane farmers demand Rs 5,500 per tonne as crushing season begins. "The Centre has increased fuel and fertiliser prices, but no Cabinet meeting was convened to consider our demand. Ethanol is also a fuel, and the same parameters should apply to it," he said.
